Our network engineers are currently investigating a network outage which was caused by a planned maintenance work that was scheduled to take place this morning. A copy of the original announcement can be seen here:-

We encountered problems during the maintenance window that caused the failure of a core transit switch used to provide connectivity to our Sheffield based services. Due to the nature of this failure and the circumstances under which it occurred, the resilience we have in place to deal with such a situation was not automatically invoked.
At approximately 7:45am access was lost to all Sheffield based services including FTP, access to the Homepages servers, Email, Portal Services, Frontpage and access to the Community Site and Usergroup portals.
We were aware of the implications of the work that was being conducted and for this reason we had an engineer onsite at each of our Sheffield data centres. Unfortunately the problem did not arise until some time after the completion of the maintenance when the engineers in question were no longer on site.
Service was restored shortly after 8:15am this morning and customers should now be able to access all Sheffield-based services without problems.
