Whilst this problem appears to have resolved itself, we are currently investigating why this happened and also investigating reports of portal slowness over the course of today.

Investigation has identified that the problem is caused by reverse DNS timeouts from the three databases that hold user session data. We plan to turn these off, however as it will result in a portal and internal intranet outage for about 3 minutes to fix it we will be doing this at 5am tomorrow morning. If the problem reoccurs the decision will be taken whether to do it immediately.

Change control has been raised to turn off reverse DNS timeouts tomorrow morning. A planned maintenance post will be made should we go ahead with this work. This problem is no longer believed to be directly customer affecting.

I am downgrading this problem as it is no longer occuring, although we are still working on it as a Priority 1 problem and work will be carried out tomorrow morning to resolve it. If it starts occuring again this problem will be upgraded back to a P1. Go to current priority problems | Go to archived priority problems |
